About the LRHA
An affiliate of the
National Reining
Horse Association (NRHA), the Louisiana Reining Horse Association
(LRHA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of
the Reining Horse in Louisiana. Our grass roots organization hosts
reinings, trail rides, fun shows and clinics, as well as providing
information to anyone interested in the reining horse. The association
provides a forum for exhibitors, breeders, and anyone interested in
the sport of Reining. The LRHA is currently planning to host a
Louisiana
Breeders Classic Futurity to be held for the first time in 2008.
What is
Reining?
Reining is a
judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a ranch
type horse in the confines of a show arena. Often called the
“Dressage” of western events, the Reining Horse event is the
ultimate blending of horse and rider, combining speed and
maneuverability through a series of intricate patterns.
Incorporated in
1966, the National Reining Horse Association is the governing
body of the worldwide sport of Reining. NRHA, with their
International Headquarters in Oklahoma City is responsible for
promoting the sport of Reining and working to ensure the highest
standards of competition. NRHA receives corporate support from
Cinch, Rockies, and Cruel Girl; Markel Insurance; Oklahoma
Convention & Visitors Bureau; Kiser Arena Specialists; Classic
Equine; LaQuinta Inns and Suites, Land O Lakes/Purina Mills LLC
(Official United States Feed Sponsor of the NRHA); Anderson Bean
Boot Company; Adequan (Official Joint Therapy of the NRHA);
Pards Western Shop and Smith Brothers.
Reining is the
most recent addition to the United States Equestrian Team. This
is partly due to the excitement that Reining provides for the
participant and spectator alike. Across the country Reining
events are drawing larger and larger crowds to the premier
events. In NRHA competition, contestants are required to run one
of ten approved patterns. Each pattern includes small slow
circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, rollbacks, 360
degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are
the hallmark of the reining horse.
There are 22
different countries that compete in Reining competitions at the
World Equestrian Games. These games are televised
internationally. In 2010 the World Equestrian Games will be held
in Lexington, Kentucky. This will be the first time in history
that the World Equestrian Games will be held outside of Europe.
The 2010 event is expected to draw more than 500,000 spectators
and bring over $150 million dollars to the Kentucky economy. The
sport of Reining is being strongly considered as the fourth
Olympic Equestrian Discipline, with the first medal competition
to be held at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
